This large winter landscape presumably depicts the surroundings of Reifferscheid, where Fritz von Wille owned his first house. A painting made in 1882 inscribed by the artist with "Reifferscheid" appears to depict the same motif (Lempertz auction 674,12.12.1991, lot 726). The present work features the river, now swollen from the melting snow, much more prominently than the earlier work.
