Abraham Hondius

BOAR HUNT

Oil on panel. 38 x 49.5 cm.
Abraham Hondius 1666.

The Rotterdam artist Abraham Hondius was among the generation of Dutch painters who began their careers in the mid 17th century and were thus able to look back on a rich artistic tradition. In order to differentiate himself both from this tradition, and from his many competitors, Hondius specialised in hunting scenes in a highly individual and unusual colour palette. This eccentric style is also displayed in this boar hunt, which uses starkly contrasting colours, and in which the red eyes of the beasts lend the painting an exaggeratedly wild character.
