Frans de Hulst

River Landscape with a Boat

Oil on panel. 37.5 x 52.5 cm.
Signed lower left: F. D. HVLST.

Frans de Hulst was born in Haarlem in 1606. In his hometown he was able to study first-hand the revolutionary changes occurring in Dutch landscape painting initiated by the circles of Jan van Goyen and Salomon van Ruysdael. He was taught by Pieter Mulier and specialised in river landscapes, of which the present work is a highly characteristic example. Van Hulst used a low horizon and subtle colour palette influenced by van Goyen. The architectural motifs are thus pulled further into the foreground and dominate the silhouette as the landscape elements dominate the horizon. The piece was originally conceived as an oval composition but has been subsequently amended.
