Probably Bohemia second half 15th century

A carved wooden figure of the Virgin and Child, probably Bohemian, second half 15th century

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. With extensively overpainted older polychromy. A large figure of the Virgin standing in balanced contrapposto designed for a frontal viewpoint. She holds the nude, blessing Christ Child in Her left hand over Her hip and an apple in Her other hand. The Madonna's head is covered by a veil and crown, and She wears a pleated floor-length gown which in turn is almost entirely concealed by a golden cloak, which falls in thick curved and vertical folds and largely characterises the figure's sculptural effect.
The Child's left arm broken, the fingers probably replaced. Minimal wear. Height 120 cm.
