Spain late 15th century

A late 15th century Spanish carved wooden figure of the Virgin and Child

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse partially flattened. With partially retouched older polychromy.. A figure of the standing Virgin dressed in a long, plain gown and a cloak held drawn across Her body. The nude Christ Child holds a dove in His right hand and reaches for a pear held by His mother with His left. The work appears to be influenced by contemporary Flemish art, but the Virgin's features in particular speak for a Spanish origin.
With several short, fine vertical cracks. Minimal wear. Height 106 cm.

Provenance

From a Spanish collection.
