A Franconian carved wooden relief with the baptism of Christ, early 16th century

Carved from three blocks, the reverse flattened and partially hollowed out. Minimal remains of former polychromy.. A silhouetted high-relief showing Christ standing in the River Jordan in the centre, Saint John kneeling with a book to one side, and an angel holding Christ's robe. The work's style allows it to be placed within the circle of Tilman Riemenschneider.
The joins between the working blocks visible. One of Saint John's finger's lose. The angel's wings replaced. Wear. 75 x 80 x 15 cm.
