A carved wooden relief of the Nativity, probably Bavarian, early 16th century

Worked from two blocks, the reverse flattened. With extensively retouched older polychromy. A charming high-relief depiction of the birth of Christ before a plain architectural backdrop. The piece shows Mary and Joseph kneeling in adoration before the figure of the Christ Child lying in a wicket basket, along with the ox and ass, rejoicing angels and the approaching shepherds.
The vertical crack between the blocks visible. A small addition above the angel. Wear. 99 x 116 x 5 cm.
