Brussels circa 1510

A Brussels carved oak figure of Saint Catherine, circa 1510

Carved almost fully in the round, the reverse only slightly flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy.. The saint originally held a sword in her right hand, with which she pierced the head of the prone figure of Emperor Maxentius at her feet in an dainty gesture. She holds an open book in her left and her girded gown fits closely around her slender waist to fall in a broad sweep down to base. The fashionable long sleeves of her gown also fall low to the ground and her head is covered by a bonnet.
Saint Catherine's right hand and sword and Maxentius' sceptre lacking. Parts of the bonnet may be replaced, the index and middle finger of the left hand replaced. Wear with minimal losses. Height 76 cm.
