Johann Georg Weckenmann, circle of

An alabaster figure of a female slave from the circle of Johann Georg Weckenmann

Carved in the round, the original socle worked separately.. This statuette is related to the figural decor of the "Tartarenzimmer" of the Hagschlößchen near Haigerloch commissioned by Prince Friedrichs von Hohenzollern. Johann Georg Weckenmann made figures of male and female slaves for the decor of this room from 1761 to 1773. Only two of the original figures survived the destruction of the hunting palace by fire, and these were purchased by the Liebighaus in Frankfurt in 1919 (inv. nos. 690 and 691). This similarly designed statuette was most probably the work of an artist from Weckmann's inner circle.
In good overall condition, the head pegged on. Some plaster replacements to the back of the socle. Height 39 cm.

Provenance

The Dr. Bernhard Decker Collection.
