Venetian School late 16th century
THE HOLY FAMILY WITH THE INFANT SAINT JOHN
Oil on canvas (relined). 80.5 x 82.5 cm.
Formerly attributed to Moretto da Brescia, this painting is the work of a Venetian master from about 1560-80. The model for the cool colours, glowing out of the dark, may have been Tintoretto, the type of figures and the mountainous landscape in the background are also reminiscent of him. At the same time, the works of Veronese, the other great Venetian painter of the time, would have been familiar to our anonymous painter.
