Jan Peeters, attributed to

Ships in Stormy Seas by a Rocky Coastline

Oil on canvas (relined). 59 x 86 cm.
Signed to the lower right on the stone: (...) Peeters.

The present work was hitherto ascribed to the oeuvre of Bonaventura Peeters, but Laurens Schoemaker of the RKD attributes it instead to his younger brother Jan. Jan Peeter's paintings often feature sailing ships and galleys in distress or shipwrecked, and both the motif and style of this work fit neatly into his known oeuvre. The RKD lists this piece as no. 269136. A similar piece by this artist can be found in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London.
