"Les Paplions. Girls' Costumes"

Inscribed in ink "Mariinski-Theatre a production of the literary fund 10th March 1912 A.J." to the reverse. Gouache over pencil on yellowed, machine-made paper, entirely mounted on card. 28.6 x 20.5 cm. Inscribed in Cyrillic "Bakst" in pencil on verso. - The edges slightly damaged and with minor losses and foxing. With old hanging mountings to the reverse.

This piece is presumably a design made for the ballet in two acts "Le Papillion" choreographed by Marie Taglioni and with the music of Jacques Offenbach which was performed for the first time in Paris in 1860.
