A rare large carved oak eagle lectern

Carved in multiple pegged sections. Some small replacements. H 197.5 cm.
French or Belgian, 17th C.

The lectern is used to read the gospels during church services. The eagle is often chosen as a design for lecterns due to its association with Saint John the Evangelist. The depiction of the over dimensional eagle in flight also had an emotionally suggestive effect on churchgoers. There are similar lecterns in the Benedictine abbey Saint Philibert in Tournus and in the fomer Cistercian church Orval.
