A carved pinewood figure of a Chinese man

Swiss stone pine with polychrome laquer decor, gilding, and glass eyes. A rare, standing figure carved in the round on a square plinth. The head worked separately and mounted so that it can nod. Dressed in a finely draped gown decorated with peony flowers and trailing vines. Minor losses and retouches, primarily over cracks. H 100.5 cm.
South Germany, Austria, or Veneto, 18th C.

This piece may have been made for the Alte Schloss Ermitage in Bayreuth. The polychromy, facial expression, and clothing display stylistic parallels to figures in the Japanisches Kabinett, and the decor there also reflects the playful and ironic character typical of the Bavarian Baroque.
