The Virgin and Child

Oil on panel. 42 x 35 cm.

The style of this work follows a manner of depicting the Madonna inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's “Madonna Litta” painted circa 1490 and today housed in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Leonardo was active in Milan from 1482 to 1500, and this had a significant influence on the development of art in Lombardy, especially the works of the painter Ambrogio da Fossano, called Il Bergognone. His “Madonna del Latte” (Museo Poldi Pezzoli) painted around 1492 could have been a direct inspiration for this work.
