Landscape with a Bridge over a River

Gouache on card. 19.2 x 24.9 cm.
Signed lower centre: W TROOST INV. F..

Willem Troost was born in Amsterdam, but moved to Düsseldorf to train as a painter in 1712, where he also worked for the Electoral court. Following the death of Elector Johann Wilhelm in 1716, Troost was active in Cologne, Duisburg, and Cleves, before returning to Holland in 1735. He was particularly well-known for his fine gouaches. The mountainous landscape with lush forests depicted in this work was probably inspired by the artist's travels throughout Germany.
