Lower Rhine Region, circa 1480/1490

A Lower Rhenish carved oak figure of St. John the Evangelist, circa 1480/1490

Carved in the round. Extensive remains of older polychromy, the face overpainted. A youthful figure of the Saint standing on a facetted plinth and holding the chalice in his extended left hand, designed for a frontal and lowered viewpoint. The work is characterised by its unusual physiognomy and the voluminous and detailed drapery of the girded robe and the cloak worn draped over the arms of the slender figure. This fine piece is thought to originate from the workshop of Dries Holthuys, who was active in Cleves around 1480 – 1510.
The cuppa of the chalice and the left toes lacking. Minimal wear. Height 80 cm.

Provenance

Collection of Prof. Dr. Hans Waege, Belgium.
