Probably Seaswabia, circa 1470/1480

A carved wood figure of St. George, probably Lake Constance Region, circa 1470/1480

Presumably limewood, carved in the round and partially freestanding. With partially overpainted older polychromy, presumably original in some areas. A figure of the saint designed for a frontal viewpoint. He is depicted in armour, driving a lance into the gaping mouth of the dragon coiled at his feet. The piece displays exceptional quality in both composition and rendering, especially in the depiction of the golden cloak, which the saint wears slung around his shoulders, encasing the figure like a shell and reaching down to the dragon at his feet.
The lance presumably a replacement, the front left of the plinth replaced. Minimal wear. Height 123 cm (with lance).

Provenance

Collection of Prof. Dr. Hans Waege, Belgium.
