Probably Maasland, mid-14th century

A carved wood figure of a Holy Bishop, probably Meuse Region, mid-14th century

Carved in the round. Extensive remains of older polychromy, the face overpainted. A full-figure depiction of a bishop saint standing in balanced contrapposto and designed for a frontal viewpoint. He wears bishop's robes and a tiara, and would have originally held a crozier in his (now lost) right hand. Great care and attention to detail have been given in the depiction of his layered robes, and the curving hems at the figure's sides are particularly finely observed.
The right arm and left hand lost. Losses to the front edge of the plinth. Some wear. Height 99 cm.
