Hubert Salentin attended the Düsseldorf Academy as of 1850, where he was taught under Wilhelm von Schadow, Carl Ferdinand Sohn, and Adolph Tidemand. Two of his works, painted in 1872 and 1878, depict this motif of a girl sitting at a church pew (cf. M.
