With an old collection label to the back of the panel: “Ed. K.[?] Wey[?]er Hamburg”.
Antonio Rotta was born in Görz near the border between Slovenia and Italy. He began his studies at the Venetian Academy in 1841. Genre scenes set in the city on the lagoon became one of the artist's preferred motifs, and he had a particular talent for depicting children. His works attained widespread popularity and dissemination in the form of lithographs, and were characterised by their delicate colouring and realism.
