Peder Mørk Mønsted

Forest Path in Winter

Oil on canvas. 40 x 60 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: P. Mønsted Raadvad 1917.

The Danish painter Peder Mønsted was one of a number of late 19th century artists who travelled Europe, the Near East, and North Africa, gathering impressions from these places in their works. However, Mønsted was always to return to the landscapes of Denmark and Scandinavia. Works such as the present canvas depict these landscapes as untouched and deserted. Mønsted's works began to be exhibited regularly in Copenhagen in 1874, but they were also displayed in Lübeck, Paris, and the Glaspalast in Munich. The important exhibition “Licht des Nordens” (northern light), which was held in Frankfurt and Stockholm in 1995, once again brought this Danish painter's atmospheric landscapes into the focus of collectors and curators during our times.
