''The pictures of the early 2000s are subversive painterly records of the neutralisation of cultural encodings with which Meese propagates the freedom of art independent of man. They open up numerous associative spaces for the viewer through the narrative structures disparately set up by Meese. The newer works on the other hand largely deny an iconographic reading and therefore become even sharper and purer propaganda material for the idea of a man-free ''dictatorship of art''. Thus, the narrative tone of the most recent works is for the most part silenced, the world creator and narrator Meese steps into the background. Correspondingly, the pictures have lost their stage-like character, the picture planes and the text are more closely interwoven, pushing to the front edge of the picture in their role as declaration. The clear figural design of the character, which until then had been partly identifiable and named, also dissolves and avoids amorphous-seeming beings.''
