A large gilded and lacquered wood figure of Guanyin. 17th/18th century

Seated in lalitasana on a separate large lotus blossom, the right arm resting on her knee while the left hand is held forward, her robes falling in elegant folds, wearing a necklace and bracelets, the moulded stones painted in red and black lacquer. The chignon is covered by a scarf falling limply to her shoulders. Minor damage.
Total height 131 cm; height of the figure 94.5 cm

Two bodhisattva figures worked in the same style as this present Guanyin were sold in these rooms 7./8.12.2012, lot 123 and 6./7.12.2013, lot 136. While the bodhisattva figures could not be identified by name, we now can presume that since they were originally placed to both sides of this Guanyin figure they represent Wenshu Pusa (Manjusri) und Puxian Pusa (Samanthabhadra). In the Qing dynasty such impressive groups of bodhisattva and Buddha adorned many Buddhist temple buildings.

Compare also a 130 cm high Guanyin figure seated in the same posture on a double lotus formerly in the private collection of the Cologne art dealer Editha Leppich (1904-1992), sold at Lempertz, 26./27.11.1993, lot 302.
