Johann Heinrich Appelius

Portrait of Countess Dorothea Friederike of Hanau

Oil on canvas (edges relined). 183 x 120 cm.
Signed and dated centre right: J. H. Appelius. Pin. 1731 (to the open book).

Dorothea Friederike (1676-1731) was the daughter of Margrave Frederick of Brandenburg-Ansbach and his first wife Johanna Elisabeth of Baden-Durlach. She was also half-sister to the British Queen Caroline, wife of George II.
Dorothea Friederike married Count Johann Reinhard III of Hanau in 1699. The marriage of her only child Charlotte Christine to Landgrave Ludwig VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt secured the county of Hanau for Hesse. A large replica of the present portrait painted two years after it is kept in Schloss Philippsruhe (Historisches Museum Hanau).
