A commode by Abraham Roentgen

Walnut and oak veneer on softwood, solid carved walnut, replaced yellow metal mountings, original iron locks. Bombé form cabinet with flat back panel, carved feet and apron, mouldings to all three drawers and the apron centre, concave mouldings, and fine, symmetrical veneer. Restored. H 82, W 125.5, D 69 cm.
Neuwied, ca. 1755 - 60.

This cabinet is a product of Abraham Roentgen's early period in Neuwied. The brothers from Herrenhuth had recently established themselves there at the appointment of Count Johann Friedrich Alexander zu Wied and were occupied with building up their workshop. Conditions in Neuwied were more favourable than in Herrenhaag, with greater access to human resources and the ability to serve a larger customer base across the Rhine.
Abraham Roentgen did not produce many cabinets in the 1750s, but those that he did create were among the finest works of this period. The most notable of these are of course the cabinets made for Johann Philipp von Walderdorff decorated with the mosaic marquetry which Roentgen developed in London. He also produced simpler pieces with burr walnut veneer, a pleasant material which allows more attention to be drawn to the form of the furniture. Instead of bronze mountings, the pieces were often ornamented with carvings to the legs and angles.

Provenance

Bavarian collection, sold in Lempertz auction 955, lot 900.

Literature

A very similar cabinet with a marble top, original mountings and bronze mouldings in Weilburg castle, possibly purchased by Prince Karl Christian von Nassau-Weilburg (cat. Edle Möbel für höchste Kreise, Neuwied 2007, no. 25.2).
