A pair of English Blue John urns

With fillings to the porous areas and gilt-metal mountings. Decorative Neoclassical vases carved from solid fluorite with foliate mountings and tall handles issuing from acanthus fronds. Surface slightly dull. H ca. 46 cm.
Attributed to The Soho Manufactory Birmingham, design attributed to Matthew Boulton, ca. 1770 - 80.

In the 1770s Matthew Boulton (1728 - 1802) and John Fothergrill cooperated on the industrialised production of mountings based on French designs such as these ones. The results were so successful that Catherine the Great preferred them to the French products.
