Alexander Adriaenssen was born in Antwerp in 1587. He was one of a number of Flemish painters in the early 17th century specialising in the still life genre and covering all of its facets. Still lifes by Adriaenssen have survived showing flowers and fruit as well as birds and game, but the majority of his paintings depict fish. In this work, he depicts several types of fish, including carp, salmon, and plaice, in a kitchen interior beside an arrangement of fruits and vegetables commonly served with them, such as asparagus, melon, artichokes, and onions.
