Frans de Momper

Hilly Landscape with Tall Trees

Oil on panel (parquetted). 68 x 92 cm.
Signed lower left: f D momper.

Frans de Momper came from a family of painters in Antwerp to which Josse de Momper - his uncle - also belonged. Following his training in Antwerp, he was accepted into the Guild of Saint Luke in that city, and as of 1647 went on to work in The Hague, Haarlem, and Amsterdam before returning to Antwerp in 1650. His stay in Holland may account for his surprising affinity to Dutch landscape painting despite his Flemish origin; especially to the works of Jan van Goyen, whose influence is also evident in the present panel.
We would like to thank Ellis Dullaart of the RKD in The Hague for confirming the authenticity of this work upon examination of photographs.
