Reinier Nooms was born in Amsterdam some time between 1623/24 and trained in the same city. He specialised in marine depictions and signed his works with "Zeeman". He was apparently actually a sailor, and this allowed him to bring his practical knowledge of seamanship to canvas. He also took several longer sojourns to Paris. In Amsterdam he worked together with the publisher Cornelis Danckerts to create widely disseminated prints of his compositions.
