Isaac de Moucheron

Southern Park Landscape with a Fountain and Courting Couple

Oil on canvas (relined). 65 x 83 cm.
Signed lower left: I. Moucheron. fecit.

Isaac was the son of the successful painter Frederik de Moucheron (see lot 2089), and took over his father's studio at age 18. Isaac de Moucheron travelled to France and Italy, where he remained for two years before returning to Amsterdam. He stayed loyal to the landscapes of Italy and the atmosphere of Southern Europe throughout his career. He also introduced the park landscape genre to painting, which proved to be highly popular among his contemporaries. The present work is an excellent example of this genre, combining the imposing palace architecture on the left with ancient ruins, perhaps a reference to his time in Italy. In the centre of the garden we see an elegant courtly couple admiring an ornamental fountain. Another version of this composition without the figures was sold in Paris in 2004 (Piasa, 25.6.2004, lot 10).
