Austria circa 1320

An Austrian carved wooden figure of the Virgin and Child, circa 1320

Carved almost in the round, the reverse only slightly flattened. Remains of earlier polychromy.. A standing figure of the crowned Virgin designed for a frontal viewpoint. She holds the clothed and blessing Christ Child in Her left arm over Her hip. The gently swaying S-shaped pose of the Virgin is accentuated by the varied scheme of drapery of Her robes, in which the curving folds before Her body form a dramatic contrast to the vertical drapery at the figure's sides.
The Virgin's right hand and the Child's left hand lost. The central vertical fold presumably partially replaced. Wear with losses. Height 84 cm.
