Austria 2nd quarter 15th century

An Austrian wooden figure of the Virgin Enthroned, 2nd quarter 15th century

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. Partially overpainted older polychromy. A figure of the crowned Virgin seated on a plain throne designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint. She holds the nude Christ Child on Her left knee whilst He grasps for the apple held in Her right hand. The Madonna is dressed in a gown fastened by a belt at the waist, and a cloak draped over Her shoulders which falls in cascading folds over Her knee. The work can be localised to the Salzburg area.
The separately worked figure of the Child in the Virgin's hands is a later addition. Losses to the crown; a small canvas-covered loss around the Virgin's belt. Minimal wear. Height 86 cm.
