A South German wooden figure of Saint Peter, circa 1470/80

Carved in the round. Partially overpainted older polychromy. A figure of the apostle designed for a frontal viewpoint with finely carved and highly individual facial features and hair. The replaced key attribute identifying the figure as Saint Peter is almost certainly correct. The work's quality is particularly evident in the richly and often deeply carved drapery of the cloak, which surrounds the figure's body like a shell.
A vertical crack to the chest. The hands with attributes, the front edge of the plinth, and the feet replaced. Some wear. Height 84 cm.
