A South German carved wooden figure of Saint John, circa 1500/1510

A finely carved depiction of the saint standing in contrapposto and facing slightly to the right. Saint John, the favourite disciple of Christ, is depicted young and clean shaven with his head bowed and his hands folded in a mournful gesture, indicating that the sculpture was originally intended as part of a Crucifixion group.
A vertical hairline crack to the front, a small restoration to the plinth in this area. A small crack to the drapery of the right side. Minimal wear. Height 49 cm.
