Antwerp circa 1540/1550

An Antwerp carved oak relief depicting the healing of Naaman, circa 1540/1550

Carved from two blocks, the reverse flattened. Minor remains of former polychromy. This pierced relief originates from a winged altarpiece, and is a typical example of the Antwerp school of the mid-16th century. It depicts the bath of the Syrian commander Naaman, who the prophet Eliseus ordered to bathe in the Jordan to cure him of leprosy. This Old Testament story is considered a type of the baptism of Christ.
Minimal wear. 44 x 38 x 6 cm.
