A carved relief of the Visitation, probably South German, circa 1520

The reverse hollowed out. Largely overpainted older polychromy. This silhouetted relief depicts Mary's meeting with Saint Elisabeth, the mother of John the Baptist. Elisabeth greets Mary at the entrance to her house against a rocky landscape in which the Virgin is depicted a second time on Her way to visit Elisabeth.
A vertical hairline crack to the upper centre. Minimal wear. 61.5 x 49 x 4 cm.
