Michael Neher

The Fruit Seller

Oil on canvas (relined). 57 x 46 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: M: Neher. 1827.

Michael Neher is primarily known as a painter of architecture, whose detailed city and architectural views were enlivened by their atmospheric moods and carefully painted figures. This same quality also characterises his - generally early - genre paintings, of which this scene of a fruit seller and a young customer provides a fine example. The work is comparable to a significantly smaller piece painted in the same year showing a similar composition with a knife grinder and several other figures before a detailed architectural backdrop (formerly coll. of Georg Schäfer, Schweinfurt, illus. in “Münchner Maler im 19. Jahrhundert“, vol. 3, Munich 1982, p. 217).
