Oswald Achenbach

View of Naples with Mount Vesuvius

Oil on canvas. 50.5 x 60.5 cm.
Signed lower right: Osw. Achenbach.

After his first great Italian sojourn in 1850, which led the 23-year-old Oswald Achenbach to Genoa and Rome, he was to return to Italy for longer periods again in his later years, having since become a famous landscape painter. In 1871 he travelled to Capri and Ischia near Naples, as well as Amalfi and Sorrent, and in his trip in 1882 he returned to Naples again, as well as visiting Rome and Florence.
This work shows a view of the famous Bay of Naples seen from the West, with the city and the Castel dell´Ovo and Mount Vesuvius towering over the town and coastline on the horizon. The scene in the foreground is charmingly enlivened by market sellers and fisher boats landing. The slightly looser brushwork and colourful but balanced composition allow us to date this piece to Oswald Achenbach's later period in the 1880s.
