Johann Pietersz Schoeff

Panoramic River Landscape with Travellers and Riders

Oil on panel (parquetted). 77.5 x 118 cm.
Signed and dated lower centre: J. Schoeff 1648.

Johann Pietersz Schoeff is thought to have been born and raised in Antwerp, but moved to The Hague in 1639. There he lived next to Jan van Goyen for a time, and like him was highly influenced by Salomon van Ruysdael and Lucas van Uden. Schoeff also created a number of works that H.-U. Beck describes as “own creations without predecessors”. These are mainly panoramic landscapes with rolling hills, punctuated by hedgerows”. The present work is an important example of this latter genre and has been published multiple times. It is also one of the largest known paintings by Schoeff (registered with the RKD in The Hague under the no. 61973 as an original work).
