A pair of Berlin KPM Attic style scroll-handled vases

Unidentified model. Fired in two parts and screw mounted. The raised handles issuing from palmettes, the scroll terminals decorated on both sides with female mascarons. The neck painted with a foliate border on sepia ground. Blue imperial eagle mark in a circle, red imperial orb mark, impressed 38, incised III. H ca. 40 cm.
1847 - 49.

The "Munich form" designated for royal presentation gifts was also based on an antique model, namely the Attic hydria. The vessel was designed to hold water and often sumptuously painted. The scroll-handled krater form is first found in the Peloponnese in the 6th century B.C. and was used for mixing wine. Royal Berlin adapted this form for porcelain vases in the 19th century, decorating the handle terminals with reliefs. However, the design was not used often, meaning that the present works are highly seldom examples of a rarely used form.

A similar biscuit porcelain vase after the antique in the manner of Wedgewood from the collection of the English Prince Consort now kept in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, 7321-1860 (in: Köllmann/Jarchow, Bildband, Munich 1987, illus. 556).
