Carl Röhling

A Hunting Party at Grunewald Palace

Oil on canvas. 53 x 47 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: C. Röhling Grunewald 98.

The almost impressionist style of this work is unusual within Carl Röhling's oeuvre, as he was primarily known as a narrative painter. It depicts a picturesque view of a hunting party departing from Grunewald Castle behind bare winter trees. The castle was built as a hunting lodge in 1542/45 and is the oldest existing castle in Berlin. It was constructed for the Brandenburg Elector Joachim II in the Renaissance fashion and given the name “Zum grünen Wald”. The name of the castle was adopted for the region of Grunewald that still exists to this day.
