A carved giltwood cartouche with an eagle in flight

A dynamic model of a perching eagle with outstretched wings before a broad scrollwork cartouche, the reverse flattened. Earlier insect damage, minor replacements, wear, and retouches. H ca. 45, W 105 cm.
Attributed to the studio of Andreas Schlüter, early 18th C.

According to tradition, this eagle cartouche originally hung in Berlin Palace in a room which was later refurbished into a tea salon by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in 1824.

Provenance

Acquired by Spik in Berlin in 1956.
