A portrait miniature of an older gentleman

Gouache on ivory miniature of a man with a grey beard, in a giltwood frame. 5.6 x 4.5 cm.
After Balthasar Denner, 18th / 19th C.

Although Balthasar Denner (Hamburg 1689 - 1749 Rostock) began his artistic career as a miniaturist, very few miniatures have as yet been securely ascribed to his oeuvre. Born in Hamburg, Denner worked as a portrait painter in royal courts throughout Germany and Europe. He was known for his exceptional attention to detail, which earned him the moniker "Pore Denner".

Provenance

Purchased in 1980 from Frye & Sohn art dealers, Münster; subsequently in the Collection of Dr. Günther Bartels, Göttingen
