Joris van Son

Still Life with Bread, a Crab, Fish, Fruit, and a Porcelain Dish

Oil on canvas (relined). 38 x 55 cm.

Joris van Son was born in Antwerp in 1623, and already registered as a master with the local Guild of Saint Luke when he was just 20 years old. It is not known under whom he apprenticed, but it is assumed that he had at least some contact with Jan Davidsz de Heem prior to 1643, as van Son appears to have been influenced strongly by his style. Like de Heem, van Son specialised in still lifes of various genres. We know of vanitas and luxury still lifes, floral still lifes, and cartouches surrounded by fruit garlands.
Fred Meijer has confirmed this unsigned work to be an authentic Joris van Son.
