Jakob Salomonsz. van Ruysdael

Wooded Landscape with Shepherds and Animals

Oil on panel (parquetted). 81 x 106 cm.

This large-format landscape is characteristic of Jakob Salomonsz. van Ruysdael. He was the son of Salomon van Ruysdael, who was responsible for popularising the motif of cows at a watering hole in Dutch painting. However, his son's works - with their numerous trees, hills, lone oak trees, dun coloured cattle, and gnarly branches - differ greatly from those of the father.
We would like to thank Fred Meijer, who found a photograph of this work - that was housed in a Dutch family collection for over 60 years - in the RKD in The Hague and confirmed it to be an authentic work by Jakob Salomonsz van Ruysdael.

Certificate

Fred Meijer March 2017.

Provenance

In a Dutch private collection for two generations.
