David Cornelisz de Heem

Still Life with Flowers in a Glass Vase

Oil on canvas (relined). 59 x 49.5 cm.
Signed lower right: Dde Heem.

David de Heem belonged to an important family of Netherlandish still life painters who originated in Utrecht and were active in Antwerp and Haarlem. He was a pupil and employee of his father Cornelis de Heem and continued the family tradition of still life painting into the early 18th century. Signed works by David de Heem, like the present canvas, are very rare. The artist not only eternalised himself in his signature on the stone slab, but the window of his studio can also be seen reflected in the glass vase.
The subdued, elegant colour palette and balanced composition of this floral still life are typical of David de Heem's work. The delicate white, red, and yellow tones of the leaves dominate the composition, and the blossoms are arranged to create a harmonious triangular form.
