Andrea Belvedere, called Abate Andrea

Large Floral Still Life with Peonies, Parrot Tulips, Mallow, Larkspur, Iris, and Nasturtiums

Oil on canvas (relined). 98 x 173 cm.

Belvedere was one of the leading proponents of still life painting in Naples. His works were largely inspired by those of his teacher Paolo Porpora, as well as the works of Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo. He was court painter to Charles II of Spain in Madrid from 1694-1700. Together with Luca Giordano, he was commissioned to carry out the painted decor of El Escorial.
This painting derives much of its charm from the contrast between the opulent asymmetrical arrangement of sunlit flowers in the foreground and the monochrome shadowy landscape background. This pronounced chiaroscuro is typical of Belvedere's works.
In her expertise, Mina Gregori describes the present work as a masterful and characteristic work of Andrea Belvedere.
