This work was painted by the Kassel court painter Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder. The back of the relined canvas bears the inscription "Freifrau von Knigge geb. Freiin v. Baumbach". The Henriette von Baumbach, who was married to Freiherr Adolph von Knigge, was born in 1749, so the sitter of this portrait, which was painted in 1758, can probably be identified as the Caroline Henriette von Baumbach, who married Lieutenant Colonel Carl Ludwig von Urff in 1755. Tischbein had already painted her once before in the year of her marriage (Schloß Wilhelmsthal near Kassel, inv. no. 10667).
