A late 15th century carved wooden figure of the Virgin and Child, possibly Central Rhine Region

Carved in the round. With remains of older polychromy, the reverse overpainted.. A figure of the Virgin standing in contrapposto, designed for a frontal viewpoint. She holds the Christ Child over Her right hip as He grasps at Her veil. The sculpture is characterised by the detailed and deeply carved curving and horizontal folds of the Virgin's cloak and the finely worked hair falling in curls down Her back.
The Virgin's crown missing, minor additions to the back of the plinth. Signs of wear. Height 56 cm.
